If you’ve been on social media for more than five minutes, you’ve probably seen it. “Link in bio.” Everyone says it. But not everyone knows exactly what it’s about—or how to use it in a way that actually works.
Here’s a quick rundown, in plain English.
The basics
Some platforms (Instagram, TikTok) don’t let you post clickable links directly in your captions or posts. That’s annoying. So people started putting a link in their profile bio—the one place that allows it—and saying “check the link in bio” to point people there.
Simple idea, but super useful. That one link is your gateway to everything else.
Where it shows up
You get one link. Go to your profile, tap “Edit,” and paste a URL in the Website field. That’s your one shot to direct people somewhere off-platform.
TikTok
Same deal, but only if you’ve got a business account. Personal accounts don’t get the option (as of now). You can switch in your settings.
Twitter, LinkedIn, whatever else
Most other platforms are more chill about links. You can usually add one in your profile without restrictions. Still, “link in bio” is a phrase people understand across the board.
Why it matters
Because people are lazy. If they can't click it, they probably won’t type it. Having a good link in your bio is an easy way to guide your audience to the stuff you care about—your site, your latest blog post, a product, a playlist, whatever.
It’s not just for influencers. Everyone benefits from making things easy to find.
Okay, but what if I have more than one thing to share?
Good question. That’s where link-in-bio tools come in.
I built BareLink because I was tired of the bloated ones. Most ask you to sign up, let them track your visitors, add cookies, show you analytics you don’t need, and so on.
BareLink skips all of that. No account. No tracking. No weird scripts. Just a single page with your links.
It does what it needs to do, and nothing more.
A few quick tips
- Don’t overload your link page with 20 things. Keep it clean.
- Update it now and then. If you posted something new today, link to it.
- Mention it in your posts. People won’t guess it’s there unless you tell them.
- Test your link once in a while. Broken pages suck.
That’s pretty much it
If you’re using social media at all—whether you’re a creator, a dev, a writer, or just someone sharing cool stuff—you probably need a link in bio.
And if you want one that respects your visitors and doesn’t try to sell them something... BareLink might be worth a look.
It’s free. It’s fast. It works.
